Islands and Beaches

Breathtaking landscapes, picturesque places, wide beaches, beautiful islands. The ideal plan is to alternate the visits to historical places with walks to the islands and beaches that are plentiful in Cartagena of Indies and its surroundings.

Baru Island

It is one of the future prospects of tourist development of Cartagena of Indies. You can arrive for earth crossing the Channel of the Dike from Pasacaballos (via Mamonal) or for via aquatic crossing the Bay of Cartagena.

Rosario Island

It is a small archipelago located half an hour south of the Bay of Cartagena. It is a great place to go diving. The cabins on the island are comfortable and close to the clear waters..

Archipielago de San Bernardo

For those who wish to head further towards the south, another type of attraction is offered for travelers and swimmers. The luxurious Palm Island Hotel ( Hotel Isla Palma) of the "Decayeron" Cain. On another island there is a small fishing village that is very densely populated, which survives thanks to a cooperative society. Here swimmers should take precautions since there are zones and periods of time when intensive marine currents occur.

Tierrabomba Island

There are bathing resorts, lodging houses and restaurants on the island facing the Bocagrande District. You may reach them by boat that depart near the Caribbean Hotel and will pick you up at the agreed upon time.

Fuerte de San Fernando de Bocachica - Saint Ferdinand’s Fort

This fort is located on top of a hill in the Carex island ( which means turtle in the Caribbean language) and it is presently called Tierrabomba.

The original drawings were made by Engineer Mac Evan. Construction Began in 1753. Lorenzo de Solis made some modifications. There are inscriptions dating back as far as 1781 at the ancient dungeons.

The San Fernando Fort is shaped like a horseshoe and there are two bulwarks on either end, both of them facing north. The structure is semi - circular facing south toward the canal. Which unites the bulwarks. The lower point of both bulwarks was protected by batteries and it arches were used for military purposes and as prisons. The presence of paintings in the upper part of the walls indicates that there were bunks placed there for the artillery soldiers.

Gold Pipe ( Cano del Oro , or Canoeloro)

This is a small fisherman's village that was once a leper colony, whose ruins can still be seen.
